I was reflecting on the progress of this blog and I realized I hadn't ever fully explained what in the world I am doing. In the interest of clarity I have written...a mission statement. (It's actually more of a mission essay but that doesn't have the same ring to it.)
Let me start with an illustrative example. Have you ever had an awful pharmacy experience? Perhaps you dropped by on your way home to dinner and the line was unexpectedly long and slow moving. Perhaps by the time you got your turn you arrived at the counter only to find out your insurance hadn’t worked correctly so the technician starts asking you questions and typing furiously on the computer while you mentally calculate how late you will be for dinner. Finally, all the issues are cleared up and you’re ready to check out (especially after glancing behind you to see the line of impatient people) and the technician is working their fastest to help get you out of there and they spit out, “Do you have any questions for the pharmacist?” Now you may not have heard of this drug before and the five minutes you spent with the doctor wasn’t exactly educational but the directions are on the bottle, right? And the technician has printed off that lovely novel of drug information and you know if you say "No" and sign on the line you might make it home for dinner. Is it any surprise people swallow their questions in favor of getting out of the pharmacy as soon as possible?
In my experience, the super useful part of my training as a pharmacist is often wasted for people I interact with in the retail pharmacy setting because they are simply too busy. I spent four years learning how to help people take medication safely and easily and I would love to share that information with all the patients I come in contact with but most just don’t have the time to hang out at the pharmacy counter.
Enter the blog! When my husband suggested I could spend my newly found free time writing this blog I quickly realized his brilliance. (You’re welcome honey.) Having recently joined the ranks of motherhood I knew this could be especially useful for the busy mothers and fathers who often have the least amount of time at the pharmacy counter. This blog is my opportunity to share all the information I feel can really help people and know that they will have the chance to actually read and absorb it.
So this is where you come in! I want to know what you have always wanted to ask your pharmacist (or maybe even your doctor) but didn’t have the time. What personal or family health concerns do you worry about? Maybe you’re just curious about what exactly is going on behind that counter--ask away! And please don’t be shy about sharing your comments on the topics you have experience with. Some of the best information on a topic comes from people who have lived and experienced that issue.
Although I love being home with my sweet Little Miss, I miss the enjoyment I got from helping people in the pharmacy. I believe this blog can give me the chance to experience that enjoyment again while also filling the gap left by the frantic pace of most retail pharmacies. Just thinking about it makes me all tingly and excited!
Hurrah for pharmacists!
